Our Grade 11 just wrapped up an unforgettable 3-day Outdoor Education trip to Tomannsbu. While the scenery was breathtaking, the true highlight was the incredible learning we witnessed.
This trip was a powerful lesson in self-sufficiency. Students took full ownership of their experience, from organizing and preparing their own dinners to managing a cabin without running water, fetching what they needed from the stream and lake.
On day two, our students put their critical thinking and teamwork skills to the test. An orientation hike challenged them to navigate the terrain using only maps and compasses, honing their practical application of geography and spatial reasoning. They also learned how to fish, embracing new skills and adapting to the challenge, even when the fish were not cooperating!
Beyond the technical skills, the trip was a profound lesson in personal growth. Disconnecting from technology for three days allowed students to focus on genuine personal interactions and collaborative problem-solving. This environment created a space for meaningful team-building and strengthened bonds, demonstrating the value of human connection and communication.
It was amazing to see how everyone grew, not just as a group, but as individuals. The experience was about more than just a hike; it was about building confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection to both nature and each other.
